Youth Model United Nations in Tyumen Brought Together Representatives from Eight Countries
As part of the Model United Nations, Tyumen hosted a series of interactive educational events for Russian and foreign youth. The event was organized by Tyumen State University in partnership with the International Friendship Club of the Tyumen Region – a regional project by the World Youth Festival Directorate. Event participants included young people from Russia, Jordan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Colombia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
The Tyumen Model UN simulates the activities of UN bodies aimed at fostering diplomacy and effective communication skills. Russian and foreign participants took on the roles of foreign diplomats exploring the agenda of the countries they represented, participating in debates, and proposing solutions to global problems.
“The Model UN in Tyumen was hosted with the support of the International Friendship Club. It allowed young people to explore the current international agenda, submit resolutions, and communicate extensively by participating in sessions, discussing issues, proposing solutions, and spending leisure time together. As the Head of the International Friendship Club, I believe it is important that our students from Russia and abroad were integrated into joint work and successfully finalized three resolutions”, said Gyunel Bakhyshova, leader of the International Friendship Club of the Tyumen Region.
The international diplomatic team worked within three committees: the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the UN Environment Programme, and the Historical Security Council.
“I decided to participate in the Model UN because I wanted to learn about the contribution Africa can make to global development and the energy sector, as well as how to collaborate with other countries to achieve shared goals. I chose the UN Environment Programme because I’d like to learn more about climate change and the development of technologies that could help make the world cleaner”, shared event participant Wambui Bryson Kamande from Kenya.
Ivan Kalchenko, Secretary-General of the Model UN Movement, noted that the participants tried their hand at diplomacy, made new friends, and learned to defend national interests while addressing global issues. According to him, this experience helped young people develop the ability to articulate their thoughts and negotiate even with those whose views are completely different.
